What is coaching?

Working with a coach empowers you to take charge of your life for the better.

Coaching facilitates positive change by helping you to first identify what is it you wish to change, and guide you long the process of making changes.

You may need to address some shifts in your thinking. You may need to connect with what you are feeling. You may need to confirm your strengths. You may need to seek out your values. You may need to address your successes. These will help you to change and commit to new behaviours. The ultimate outcome is not just that you will achieve your goal, feel success and be on your way to becoming your best self, but that you will become your own best coach.

The first step is to engage an expert coach. Support is beneficial for a number of reasons. It helps to have someone to share with, to clearly define your goals, to give you feedback, to keep you focussed,  and to obtain expert guidance when you need it. Coaching provides you the opportunity to engage in deliberate practice.

There is a huge variety of reasons why you might seek support from a coach. You may want to achieve a specific challenging goal, or make general improvements in your life. You may be drawn towards a desired skill or away from an undesired result. Whatever it is, coaches are a catalyst for change.

There are many different types of coaches, so depending on what you want to achieve, you may need to find a coach with suitable expertise. Health and wellness coaches are expert facilitators of sustainable change in mindset and  behaviours that leads people to change, grow and thrive.

Successful coaching is based on a relationship of trust. A coach should be successful in building rapport with you, by being honest and open and accepting of who you are. A coach should show empathy and be humble. A coach helps you to find your own answers and gives you all of their attention. You should feel like you are really being listened to and should feel seen, heard and understood.

You are in the drivers seat when it comes to coaching. Your coach will provide direction and suggestions for you to try, but the lead role is yours. You hold the wisdom needed to make changes to your life, your coach is there to help you access this. Coaching sessions are always tailored to you.

Coaching is a collaborative effort. Your coach offers you a safe place to explore your potential and uses specific skills and tools to encourage progress. In return, your commitment is to bring your authentic self to coaching, and take agreed-upon actions in between sessions.

At the onset of coaching, your coach will help you to define what it is you wish to achieve. This may not be obvious initially however your coach will guide you to help clarify this. You will then envision what your success may look like which will help you to design your goals and work out how you will take action. During this process you will gain a deeper understanding about yourself and what makes you tick. You will also learn a lot about how to influence your mind, body and environment. Your coach wants you to succeed.

Ultimately, making positive changes with the support of a coach empowers you to be your best self, and to act as your own best coach.
