Now, more than ever, is the time to focus on looking after ourselves. If we are well, then those we care for and love can have a much greater chance of also being and staying well. The changes to our lifestyle due to covid-19 restrictions, means that our regular routine of looking after ourselves has changed. It is even more important now to be checking in with ourselves as to what we are doing daily to be kind, be happy and to be well.
So what can you do to ensure you are doing the basics to keep well? Here are six self care essentials that you can do every day, even whilst at home.
These are not listed in any order of priority. Your body and mind however will thank you if you are able to focus on all six every day.
- SLEEP – enough sleep and the right type of sleep is crucial for your brain to process the day, to refresh itself and prepare you for another day. Go to bed and wake up at the same time day. Try calming activities before bed to help you unwind.
- CALM – the right type of stress in the right doses is actually very good for us. However when stress keeps you on edge, keeping you in flight, fight or freeze mode, you are not able to think, feel or act clearly. Staying calm or returning to calm is key to giving your brain a rest, and to allow it to function optimally. Take time to breathe deeply and be present in the now. Only do one activity at a time rather than trying to multi-task. Do activities that bring you joy and make you smile.
- NOURISH – Keep your energy up by eating well. Choose foods that are fresh, colourful and as un-processed as possible. Hydrate yourself with water regularly throughout the day. Make the most of whatever seasonal foods you have in your area.
- MOVE – Move your body. Exercise in some way every day. If you can get outside, enjoy the weather, the fresh air and the sounds of nature around you. Walk, run, do yoga, stretch, even if you are inside. Exercise can be simple, easy and great fun with no need for big goals, other than to move.
- PURPOSE – Purposeful activity may be different right now. If you can’t fulfil your usual roles, choose other activities that you have been meaning to do. Find something to do each day that brings you satisfaction. Learn something new if you have some extra time. Challenge yourself a little. Keeping to your normal routine will help. Look back at the end of the day and identify one aspect of your day that you are grateful for.
- CONNECT – Face to face connection with our friends, family, colleagues and clients is limited right now. However we are very fortunate to have incredible technology to enable us to stay connected with others. Talk with others, play online games together, share photos and videos. Say HI to your neighbours or those you see in your street. Wave, smile and stay connected.
If you can tick these six essentials off each day, you can feel confident that you are taking the time and effort to look after yourself. This has never been as important for your health and wellbeing, as now, during these different and challenging times. Be kind to yourself.
Kia kaha – this is a māori proverb meaning stay strong.
